The wise see in it, on the contrary, the potent Law of Laws." Walt Whitman, Notes Left Over, 1881.

One point, however, must not be forgotten--ought to be put before the eyes of the people every day; and that is, although government can do little positive good to the people, it may do an immense deal of harm. . . . the Democratic principle . . . would prevent all this harm. It would have no man's benefit achieved at the expense of his neighbors. It would have no one's rights infringed upon and that, after all, is pretty much the sum and substance of the prerogatives of government. How beautiful and harmonious a system! How it transcends all other codes, as the golden rule, in its brevity, transcends the ponderous tomes of the philosophic lore! While mere politicians, in their narrow minds, are sweating and fuming with their complicated statutes, this one single rule, rationally construed and applied, is enough to form the starting point of all that is necessary in government: to make no more laws than those useful for preventing a man or body of men from infringing on the rights of other men."jessehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12618006897195013376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8206417783425267042.post-33987659253762877962008-11-14T11:46:00.000-05:002008-11-14T11:46:00.000-05:00I wasn't really turned off by their fashion sense,...I wasn't really turned off by their fashion sense, but more by my feeling that they were dressed like a group of friends who decided to go to a Halloween party dressed like a rock band. But you go and enjoy them as much as you want Jennie.
You won't catch me hating on what you like. So get hydrated, JBall, because you're going to be hearing more of them if I can help it.

All that being said, I'll admit that their look is odd and maybe doesn't work in a way that we'd like to expect from a rock group. I don't know much about fashion (as I'm reminded every day in NY), but I like odd-looking things that are almost on the verge of the grotesque. I think they are much more interesting than things that are beautifully conceived. That's another conversation, though, isn't it? Sorry.

All this to say: POO on you both (that's right, I said it). I'm going to relish every moment of their concert in January. Like I said, I enjoy their sound and I like hearing them on the radio, but I don't think I can be a big fan because of the way they look (really, I'm very very musically shallow). I fell in love with them after hearing their second album and have loved them since.

I actually like their look, but its probably because it's most fitting to their personal histories: they are 3 brothers and a fist cousin from Tennessee, from a very conservative family (the father of the 3 brothers was a traveling Pentecostal preacher and most of their childhood, I think, was spent roaming the countryside attending gospel revivals of some sort). I feel like their look is reminiscent of some kind of old-time, Appalachian fashions (mixed with attempts at being urban/hipster). And I hear a lot of that in their music.

Maybe it's just me?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8206417783425267042.post-38487525089918275702008-11-05T23:41:00.000-05:002008-11-05T23:41:00.000-05:00Those shirts are ridiculous. And yes, it is un-creative. However, the Right does not have a monopoly on being un-creative. The primary argument against the Repulican nominee (4 more years of Bush) was decided long before John McCain won the primaries.

I also think that those on the Right who are disappointed should be allowed some time to grieve. Think about how you would have felt had Obama lost. Adjustment to an outcome that one so desparetly did not desire takes longer than 24 hours. McCain supporters are not going to fall in line behind Obama that quickly. He has to earn their trust.

Still, I'm keeping an open--albeit disappointed--mind. I hope more McCain supporters can do the same, and stop thinking up silly slogans to use in 2012.Karahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14705875309995002499noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8206417783425267042.post-49113186111719610422008-11-05T20:09:00.000-05:002008-11-05T20:09:00.000-05:00ugh, so bothersome. was it nietsche who said don't...ugh, so bothersome. was it nietsche who said don't spend your life swatting at the flies- you were made for so much more than that.

we have higher hopes than proving ourselves to small minded people who do nothing but add negativity to the air.

GObama.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8206417783425267042.post-5919497966328076702008-11-04T14:07:00.000-05:002008-11-04T14:07:00.000-05:00The Thanksgiving coffee IS good. Too often during this election season, I have heard people who call themselves Christians spread rumors, lies, and hatred about the candidate they oppose. (I, however, believe that this applies to both sides of the aisle. I've heard some very untrue and hateful things said about Sarah Palin by Christians as well.) What has made us believe that the candidate we support must be good and the other guy must be evil? Such angry, extreme politics were part of the climate that precipitated the Civil War.
